Bad Weather
Rain coming in is very often the point where photographers pack up their precious machines and go home. What a mistake!
Think of all the great film scenes that take place in rain, and think of what the rain means to the scene. Think of rain-slicked night streets, of wind making trees thrash. Rainy stormy weather is exciting, and no one ever looks at such pictures and wants to get indoors.
When I went to England to work on my trees book, I went to the Lake District, not knowing that it is one of the rainiest places in the country. It rained at least part of every day I was there, and I was sure I had made a huge mistake. But in the end the photos I got made an exciting chapter for the book.
The photographer Todd Hido did a whole series of isolated houses through a rain-smeared car window, and they are as moody and moving as could be.
So don’t just stay out when it starts raining. Go further and make a plan to actually head out into a storm and drive around, perhaps at twilight. See what you get.
