I know it’s a Youtube video of something cute, but that doesn’t mean it’s frivolous.

Ages ago it occurred to me that being startled can provoke a state of thoughtless awareness that is to be highly prized in creativity. (And note that I define creativity as  state, not an action, although work done in the state is where our best art comes from.) As a result, a lot of my exercises aim at provoking this state.

But if I need a graphic example, this should do it. It is a compilation of what happens on babies faces as they go through a tunnel. Have a look.

We’re a lot more blasé now, and it takes more than a tunnel. And our response is probably more inward. Still…I think this is why artists go looking for new experiences.

This is serious. I mean it!
